The Café Tortoni is a coffee bar located at 825 Avenida de Mayo in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Initiated in 1858 by a French settler whose surname was Touan, it was named Tortoni after the Parisian café of the same name located on promenade des Italians where the establishment of the Parissiense culture accumulates in the 19th century. The café itself was encourage by Fin de siècle coffee houses. Café Tortoni was determined by U City Guides as one of the ten most attractive cafes in the world.
The area the café presently occupies was formerly the location of the Templo Escocés Scottish Temple, and the Tortoni was positioned on the corner of Rivadavia and Esmeralda. In 1880 it moved to its adjacent location but had its appearance on the other side of the block in Rivadavia Street. In 1898 the captivate on Avenida de Mayo was extended, and the facade was redecorated by originating Alejandro Christophersen.
