Before October 31, 2019, India had 29 states and 7 UTs.
After Jammu & Kashmir was reorganized into two Union Territories (J&K and Ladakh), the count became 28 states and 8 UTs.
Telangana was the newest state, formed on June 2, 2014, separated from Andhra Pradesh.
